THE RETURN OF THE WOLF TO ROME

PUBLIC CONFERENCE AIMED AT THE DISSEMINATION OF SCIENTIFIC WOLF BIOLOGY

A public event dedicated to the wolf, organized by ASD EDUCAMICANE in collaboration with DOG DIGITAL, took place on Saturday 4 February 2023 in the splendid setting of Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia (RM).

Adriano Pace, head of the Centro Cinofilo Educamicane has succeeded in his intention of creating an informative space thanks also to the patronage of the Municipality of Ariccia, in one of the most characteristic and beautiful contexts of the Castelli Romani. An informative event which, together with the careful as well as technical collaboration of Sergio Maria Stefani (Mr. Wolf - Dog Digital), sees the participation as speaker, the scholar Marco Antonelli, Naturalist, Zoologist, Hiking Guide and curator of the Canis Lupus Italicus - Wolf community Appenninico, which for years has been working closely with the WWF and with the Lipu section of the green oasis of Castel Di Guido.

With this first event begins a new EDUCAMICANE project - the Sustainable Wolf - which includes other initiatives to raise awareness and disseminate coexistence with the great predator of our Peninsula.

The start of the works, which took place around 10:00 in the morning on Saturday 4 February, saw the participation of an attentive and sensitive public towards the contents and problems inherent in the presence of the wolf in peri-urban areas, excellently tackled with scientific rigor by Marco Antonelli, who touched on thorny topics such as the predation of wolves on domestic animals, including dogs, the serious problem of hybridization, journalistic disinformation and the political management of the wolf, showing how often the atavistic fears of the animal are leveraged to economic, social and political profits. Up to deepening what is the title of the event, the return of the Wolf to Rome, with the family units that have followed one another on the Roman coast from 2016 to today. Questions from spectators followed (with a small delegation of Castelli Romani park rangers), which involved the speakers on delicate and complex topics, further demonstrating how topical the topic is and of public interest.
